Abduction
Movement that draws a body part away from the midline of the body.
Achilles tendon
Tendon of the gastrocnemius that inserts at the tarsus or hock.
Adduction
Movement that draws a body part toward the midline of the body.
Antagonist
A muscle acting in opposition to another.
Aponeurosis
Broad sheet of fibrous connective tissue that serves as a tendon to attach muscles to bone or to bind muscle together.
Arrector pili
Smooth muscles in dorsum that act to raise the hairs on the back.
Biceps brachii
Flexor of distal foreleg.
Biceps femoris
Portion of “semi” group of muscles, flexor of the distal hind limb.
Cardiac
Type of striated muscle fiber found in the heart.
Cremaster
Muscle found in spermatic cord that raises and lowers the testicles.
Cutaneous trunci
Muscle of the dermis that is responsible for insect-repelling skin twitch.
Diaphragm
Musculomembranous wall between abdominal and thoracic cavities.
Epaxial group
Muscles of the dorsal back sometimes used for intramuscular injections.
Extensors
Muscles that extend a part of the body.
External intercostals
Respiratory muscles situated between the ribs.
External oblique
Muscle that compresses and supports the abdomen.
Fascia
Sheet of fibrous membrane that encloses muscles and separates them into groups.
Fibers
Muscle threads or filaments, usually in bundles.
Flexors
Muscles that flex a part of the body.
Gastrocnemius
Muscle of the distal hind limb that flexes the leg and extends the foot.
Gluteal group
A group of muscles on the dorsal pelvis sometimes used for intramuscular injections.
Iliocostalis
Portion of epaxial group of muscles in dorsum.
Insertion
The more movable of the two points of attachment of a muscle.
