Cranial
Toward the head.
Caudal
Toward the tail.
Rostral
Within the head and toward the muzzle.
Medial
Nearer to or toward the midline.
Lateral
Farther from the midline or toward the side.
Dorsal
Toward the back.
Ventral
Toward the belly.
Proximal
Nearer to the point of origin or closer to the body.
Distal
Farther from the point of origin or away from the body.
Palmar
Caudal surface of the forelimb below the carpus (knee).
Plantar
Caudal surface of the hind limb below the tarsus (hock).
Dorsal (frontal) plane
A section through the side of the body, passing at right angles to the median plane and dividing the body into dorsal and ventral portions.
Median (midsagittal, midline) plane
An imaginary plane that passes form the front to the back through the center of the body and divides the body into right and left equal portions.
Sagittal plane
A section parallel to the long axis of the body or parallel to the median plane, dividing the body into right and left unequal parts.
Transverse plane (cross-sectional)
A perpendicular transection to the long axis of the trunk, head, limb, or other appendage.
