Globalisation EQ3 Flashcards
Name two examples of places disengaged from globalisation.
North Korea and Niger.
What historical reason has influenced isolation in North Korea?
Following WWII and the Korean war the policy of juche (self reliance) was adopted, an isolationist policy
How does North Korean politics influence its disengagement from globalisation?
The authoritarian regime creates a closed society unable to contact other countries. Multiple sanctions restrict access to trade
How do physical and environmental factors affect North Korea’s engagement to globalisation?
Located on a peninsula there is limited access to international trade markets. Mountainous terrain makes agriculture difficult. Experiences frequent droughts and food shortages, lack modern farming techniques.
over 40% of the population are undernourished
How do economic factors affect North Korea’s engagement with globalisation?
State controlled economy means heavy spending on military. limited trade volume. 90% of trade is with china. Failure to disclose information meant they are excluded from AIIB (asian infrastructure investment bank).
What historical factors influence Niger’s engagement to globalisation?
Under French colonial rule in the 1900s, education neglected. By late 1950s only 4% of all children had been to school. Reliant on France even after independence
What economic factors have left Niger disengaged from globalisation?
Currency still tied to the Franc not the Euro.
Consistently paid below market prices for the uranium they produce. In 2010 more than £2.9billion worth of uranium was produced yet only received 13%.
Reliant on Foreign aid.
What physical factors have left Niger disengaged from globalisation?
Landlocked nation located in the Sahara desert so reliant on Nigeria to connect trade.
Climate change increases the temperature, irregular rainfall and desertification.
How has uranium extraction caused harm to the Niger environment?
Dangerous levels of radiation cause inexplicable diseases in miners and contaminate water supplies- harms both humans and animals.
Give examples of tensions caused by migration.
Polictical parties such as Republicans (Trump) in the USA, the AfD party in Germany show hostility to immigrants.
Give an example of tensions caused between indigenous populations and globalisation.
The indigenous canadians take issue with industrial developments in their territory.
What issue do the indigenous canadians have with the Trans Mountain pipeline?
Pipeline goes through the heartland of indigenous territory. Bitumen spills are dangerous to the environment, difficult to remove and contaminate resources.
Give an example of tensions caused over water conflicts
Trans boundary water conflicts occur over the Mekong River
Why are there tensions over the Mekong river?
Man made construction of dams interrupt the natural flow of water, starving the river of water, fish and nutrients downstream
How many hydroelectric damns did China build on the Mekong River and how did this impact Vietnam?
7 damns were built by china and this impacted the fish population downstream. 60% less catch in Vietnam.
