Coasts EQ1 Flashcards
What is a concordant coastline and give an example?
Lulworth Cove. A concordant coastline has the same type of rock along its length. The alternating bands of hard and soft rock run parallel to the coast.
What is a disconcordant coastline and give an example?
Swanage Bay, Dorset Coastline. A disconcordant coastline is where the geology alternates between bands of hard and soft rock which are
perpendicular to the shore
What are dalmatian coasts and give an example?
Where bands of resistant rock along a concordant coastline produce parallel islands when less resistant synclines have been submerged. For example in the Croatian region of Dalmatia.
What are Haff coastlines and give an example?
Long sediment ridges topped by sand dunes that run parallel to the coast, creating a lagoon between the sea and the shore. For example Baltic Sea and Lithuanian coast.
Give an example of an emergent coastline.
Isle of Islay, Scotland.
Give an example of a submergant coastline.
The Fjords in Norway
How does geology contribute to the features on the Dorset Coastline?
Lulworth cove, Swanage bay: created by differential erosion between weak clay and chalk.
How has the geology at the Fault in Tintagel created micro features?
Tunnel Blackrock: where joints and bedding planes occur in high density the rock is weakened. A fault line creates a shatter zone of weakness forming inlets and bays. Caves such as Merlins Cave: formed at weakzone as a result of hydraulic action and abrasion.
