The flow of economic migrants after they have joined the EU. In 2004 8 eastern european countries jouned the EU which caused a large rise in migration to the UK and Ireland
Examples of extremism in europe
A rise in nationalist parties like Frances Front National and the BNP. Murder of Stephen Lawerence in Eltham 1993
Why would people control globalisation
Potential loss of cultural characteristics, widening development gaps, tackle carbon emissions, loss of jobs in developed countries to developing ones
How can globalisation be controlled
Deportation, taxes and tariffs, Embargo goods, control the media
What are fair trade doing to combat problems caused by globalisation
Offer higher income to farmers and manufacturers. Examples include coffee, chocolate, bananas and wine. Fair trade products often cost more and as the scheme grows its harder to ensure money goes to the correct place.
What is supply chain mointoring
Large buisnesses who outsource production of products monitor the companies they contact. The largest TNCs have thoudands of suppliers. Firms such as Gap and Nike now prohibit explotation in their foreign factories but it is hard to monitor the working conditions and pay of every single one of their suppliers
What is an NGO and what are they doing
A Non-Government Organisation. They are charities. Charity War on Want helped South African fruit pickers by flying a woman out to a Tesco shareholder meeting in London where she explained there were no female toilets for the workers on the farm. NGOs have limited financial resources and this can limit the scale of what they can acheive
