The rural-urban continuum
A model devised by Paul Cloke in the 1970s to represent the spectrum between urban and rural areas
Fertility rate
The average number of children a woman would have in her childbearing years
Mortality rate
The number of deaths in a particular population, scaled to the size of the population per unit time
Social intergration
The idea that all members of a community are involved in activities and the decision making process
Social mobility
The ability of people to move to different levels of the social heirarchy

Urban areas are home to 89% of the pop but they only take up 7% of the land

What has happened to fertility rates
Peak after the war and in the 60s. Gone down dramatically to near the same rate as before ww2.
What has happened to mortality rates
They have gone down very slightly since 2001. Deaths have remained fairly constant.
Migration vs mortality and fertility in Newham
Between 2001 and 2011 the Newham pop of non-UK citizens increase by 72,000 and now accounts for 55% of people.
Mortality rates have fallen, life expectancy risen from 73.3 to 80.
Fertility has increase, Newham has the UKs highest fertility rate at 76.6 per 100, this is because of migrants moving in and starting families.
