what is globalisation?
the increasing interconnectedness of societies into ‘one single global village’
what did COHEN and KENNEDY say about societies in the past and now?
past= societies were distant and independent from one another
now= with increasing interconnectedness, things like images, news, information, entertainment and music are all crossing over national borders and connecting the world.
what are the two ways in which the new media and globalisation are interlinked?
1- new media would not exist if it wasn’t for globalisation
2- interconnectedness would not be increasing at such a speed if it wasn’t for the new media
what is high culture?
what is defined by the elite and their view on what is the highest possible achievement/masterpiece, and is seen to have long-lasting meaning through generations
=eg- classical/modern art, sculptures, classical music, opera, ballet, etc
what is popular culture?
the media products enjoyed by the majority and mass of the population, it is very commercialised, and mass-produced with many seeing it as for entertainment rather than long-lasting artistic value
=eg- reality tv, popular music, soap operas, feature films, etc
what is high culture now available to?
everyone, with everyone being able to access it online
what is the first argument against globalisation and popular culture in the media?
globalisation has created a hybrid of culture
=we are now having a fusion of cultures mixing/merging to for one united culture

digital technology has now allowed people to follow and communicate with other people
what are 3 examples of global popular culture with explanations?
1- advertising, everyone is aware of different brands, recognisable logos
2- TNCs and E-commerce, buy things online from other countries
3- entertainment, adaptations of series, sporting events, Big Brother was sold to 64 other countries (glocalisation)
what is the impact of hybrid of culture?
-more choice, increases competition and quality
-attracts tourism, visit places shown in the media
-kick starts economies
-homogenisation (make things the same)
-prosumers
