GIS Flashcards
What is your knowledge, understanding of principles of GIS and systems?
GIS integrates database operations such as query and statistical analysis with unique visualization & geographic analysis offered by maps.
GIS readily converts data between different data models (unlike most database and statistical software).
What is GIS?
A way to visualise, manipulate, analyse and display spatial data
What does GIS stand for?
Geographical Information System
What GIS data structures are there?
Vector - layers containing by points
Raster - grid data
Images - scans of aerial photos
How can GIS structures be applied in practice?
They can interact to show multiple layers of data - i.e aerial photography overlayed on a site plan to establish boundary
What are some GIS outputs?
Maps is the main one
Also graphs, directions and 3D models
What are some GIS inputs
Spatial data
None Spatial data - i.e numbers/text
How do you assess data quality?
Check data sources are reliable
Check data transfer does not result in discrepancies
How do you analyse data on GIS?
Run spatial analysis query to display relevant key data on overlays
What data standards are you aware of?
The Data Standards Authority (DSA) works to improve how the public sector manages data.
How would you carry out advanced spatial analysis?
Overlay several layers of base data to show multiple data sources on one plan
What do you know about Earth observation and aerial surveys 6th edition global Guidance Note?
It will help clients communicate their goals, and what they expect to receive in terms of:
types of data accuracy resolution survey detail and final deliverables.
How does GIS integrate graphic and text information to provide useful data?
Allows them to be overlayed on one data set
How does GIS assist with measuring land?
It enables you to quickly measure large areas without the need to necessarily visit site - other than to confirm boundaries
How would you use GIS in property management?
Identify assets under particular department - i.e vacant buildings across large geographical area used for inspection schedules
Used to determine extent of common areas on industrial estates for service charges
Identify areas of ownership for fly-tipping
