What was Nationalism?
It is the love for one’s country to the point where they would die in the name of their country
Why did Nationalism grow?
After the Battle of Adwa there was a sense of national shame regarding Italy. Italians started to move abroad (many emigrated to the USA). Many Italians were angry at the fact that Italy was seen as a joke of an imperial power.
What did nationalists believe in?
They were ANTI-SOCIALIST (PSI)
They were ANTI-LIBERAL
They believed in an agressive foreign policy which included Italy’s expansion of power in Europe and in itself
They believed strongly in irredentism
What did nationalists believe war would achieve?
War and Expansion would lead to end of domestic issues in Italy by uniting the people of Italy
get rid of selfish indiviualism (liberalism)
teach the Italian people that there is NOTHING GREATER THAN ITALY and that they should be prepared to die for their country
What did the nationalists think of Giolitti working with the socialists?
They saw this as an example of corruptiona and weakness amdist the Italian political scene
What did the ANI do for the nationalists?
Brought together all forms of nationalism under one unified banner

Enrico Corradini
What problem did Giolitti have with the nationalists?
The nationalists had no intention of working with Giolitti
They instead wanted Giolitti and his liberal government out of Italy
Why was nationalism popular?
The Italian people began to fall in love with the patriotism showcased in nationalism
What did Giolitti eventually do to appease to the nationalists?
He invaded Libya…!
