What are some examples of the 5-ASA drugs?
Sulfasalazine, Mesalamine, Olslazine
What do the 5-ASA’s do?
Decrease prostaglandin, decrease inflammation.
What are some side effects of the 5-ASA’s?
Anorexia, N/V, aplastic anemia.
What are some of the steroids?
Prenisone, Methylprednisolone
What are some actions of the steroids?
Decrease inflammation, used when there’s an exacerbation!
What are some side effects of steroids?
Moon face, humpback, hyperglycemia, hypocalcemia.
What are the nursing responsibilities for steroids?
Assess for symptoms, monitor I/O, S/S infection, have to TIRTRATE OFF!!!
What kind of drug is metronidazole (Flagyl)?
Antibacterial - it prevents DNA synthesis of bacteria!
What are side effects of metronidazole?
Possible anaphylaxis, kidney, hearing problems.
What are some nursing responsibilities for metronidazole?
Look for rash, no booze while on this, no driving, etc.
What are some of the anti-diarrhea’s and what do they do?
Loperamide, Cholestyramine, Codeine - - they increase fecal bulk and inhibit peristalsis.
What are some side effects of the anti-diarrhea meds?
Drowsiness, constipation, N/V
What are some nursing responsibilities for the anti-diarrhea meds?
Assess stools, bowel sounds, skin turgor, give with meals, etc.
What are some of the immunosuppressive drugs and what do they do?
Azathinoprien, Cyclosporine, Methotrexate - they antagonize DNA/RNA synthesis.
What are some of the side effects of immunosuppressive drugs?
Stomach irritation, mouth sores, immune system decrease.
