Q

What is the energy delivery for parenteral macronutrients? (ie AA, dextrose, lipids)

(April 2022)

A

AA = 1g/mL yields 4 kcal/g. So 3.5% AA solution at 135 mL/kg/day yields
3.5g/100mL x 4 kcal/g x 135 mL/kg/day = 19 kcal/kg/day

Carbs = 1g/mL dextrose yields 3.4 kcal/kg. So 13% dextrose solution at 135 mL/kg/day yields
13g/100mL x 3.4 kcal/kg x 135 mL/kg/day = 60 kcal/kg/day

Lipids = 20% lipid emulsion 10 kcal/g. So 20% lipid emulsion at 15 mL/kg/day yields
20g/100mL x 10kcal/g x 15 mL/kg/day = 30 kcal/kg/day
