GI Labs and Imaging Flashcards
Upper endoscopy evaluates:
Esophagus, stomach, duodenum
Lower endoscopy evaluates:
Colon and distal ileum
What is the test of choice for colon cancer screen and surveillance?
Colonoscopy
What part of the GI tract does a sigmoidoscopy evaluate?
Colon up to splenic flexure
What does a sigmoidoscopy assess?
Distal colon for inflammation in patients w/low colon cancer risk
What is a capsule endoscopy?
Small intestine evaluation - a camera is contained in a capsule that the patient swallows
What is the main risk factor for developing peptic ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric MALT lymphoma?
H pylori
How can H. pylori be tested for?
Invasively by endoscopy or non-invasively (serology, 13-C urea breath test, stool antigen test)
What is the most consistently accurate test for H. pylori?
Urea breath test
- Pt drinks urea solution w/nonradioactive isotope C
- Blows into a tube
- If H. pylori present, urea is hydrolyzed and CO2 is detected
Describe contrast radiography in GI evaluation
- Barium used as contrast medium
- Provides mucosal definition
Angiography is useful for assessing what in the GI tract?
- Mesenteric ischemia
- Spread of malignancy
What does scintigraphy evaluate?
Structure, luminal transit, esophageal and gastric emptying
