- Connective Tissue Disorders.
- Raised Intra-Abdominal Pressure (e.g. Cystic Fibrosis, Prematurity).
Aetiology of Congenital Inguinal Hernias.
They are indirect hernias, resulting from a patent Processus Vaginalis.
Management of Congenital Inguinal Hernias (2).
- Surgical Repair - Herniotomy ASAP due to high risk of incarceration..
- Keep neonates and premature infants in hospital overnight due to risk of post-operative apnoea.
Presentation of Infantile Umbilical Hernias.
Symmetrical bulges under Umbilicus.
Risk Factors of Infantile Umbilical Hernias.
- Premature Babies.
- Afro-Caribbean Ethnicity.
- Down’s syndrome.
- Mucopolysaccharide Storage Disease.
Prognosis of Infantile Umbilical Hernias.
Resolve without intervention by the ages of 4-5.
Aetiology of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias.
Incomplete formation of the Diaphragm and failure of Pleuroperitoneal Canal to close completely.
Clinical Features of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias.
- Pulmonary Hypoplasia.
- Hypertension.
- Respiratory Distress that shortly occurs after birth.
Prognosis of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias.
Only 50% of newborns with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernias survive despite modern medical interventions.
