GF 10 Flashcards
What is the major difference between nonexperimental and quasi-experimental studies?
Nonexperimental makes no attempt to limit confounding variables; quasi makes some attempt
How are groups separated in nonexperimental and quasi studies?
With a non-manipulated variable such as participant characteristics or time
A research study where the researcher has to use pre-existing groups and can’t control who is in what group; creates assignment bias
A nonequivalent group design
a nonequivalent group design that simply compares the groups; nonexperimental
A differential research design
uses pre-existing groups to compare treatment condition group and control condition group
A nonequivalent control group
What are the 2 types of nonequivalent control group designs?
Posttest-only and pretest-posttest nonequivalent control groups
When the treatment group is compared with the control group only after treatment
Posttest only nonequivalent control group design; X, O, O
Both the treatment group and control group are measured before and after the treatment is administered to the treatment group
Pretest-posttest nonequivalent group design; O, O, X, O, O
Which is of the nonequivalent control group designs are classified as quasi-experimental?
Pretest-posttest nonequivalent group design
when history effects differ from one group to another
Differential effects
when one group’s scores are compared before and after treatment; has no control group
Pre-post design
the simplest type of pre-post design; one observation before treatment, one observation after
One-group pretrest-posttest design; X, O, X; nonexperimental
a series of observations before a treatment, followed by a series of observations after treatment
Time-series design; O, O, O, X, O, O, O; quasi-experimental
examines changes in behavior related to age
Developmental research designs
different groups of different ages are compared at one point in time
cross-sectional developmental research design
