Gestation & Parturition Flashcards
1
Q
Average gestation length
A
330-350 days
2
Q
Range of gestation
A
315-370 days
3
Q
Factors affecting gestation length
A
- Ponies have shorter than horses
- individual horse’s record
- colt’s 2-3 days longer than fillies
- mares with low BCS = longer gestation
- winter/early spring = longer
- late spring/summer = shorter
- late summer/early fall = even shorter
- foal at optimal time for survival
- tall fescue exposure = prolonged gestation
4
Q
Parts of the placenta
A
- Chorioallantois
- Amnion
- Umbillical cord
- Urachus
5
Q
Choriallantois
A
- Chorion: closest/attached to uterus (important for nutrition)
- Allantois: attached to chorion, lines allantoic cavity, whitish
- Allantoic cavity: fluid filled, containing waste from fetal metabolism
6
Q
Amnion
A
Surrounds fetus, forms amniotic cavity, separates foal from waste
7
Q
Umbilical cord
A
Attaches foal to chorioallantois; supplies nutrients and oxygen; will eventually break about 2 inches from body wall
8
Q
Urachus
A
Drains waste into allantoic cavity
9
Q
1-3 weeks away from parturition
A
- Udder development
- Abdomen drops down and back
10
Q
Days/hours before parturition
A
- udder development: teats full, wax, drip milk (don’t want)
- relaxed muscles around pelvis and tail head
- enlarged vulva
11
Q
Parturition
A
- usually occurs at night
- usually lying down
- usually when dark and quiet
12
Q
3 stages of labor
A
- Positioning of foal in birth canal
- Delivery
- Expulsion of placenta
13
Q
Positioning of foal in birth canal
- duration
- signs
- interventions
- end of stage
A
- usually 30 minutes - 3 hours
- signs: restless, quit eating, gets up and down, sweating, pawing, nipping at stomach (colic symptoms)
- interventions: call farm manager, make sure environment is clean, wrap tail, remove objects from stall (buckets)
- ends when chorioallantois breaks (water breaks)
14
Q
Delivery
A
- usually less than 40 minutes
- position of foal
- unattachment of umbilical cord
15
Q
Expulsion of placenta
A
- 30 minutes to 3 hour
- > 3 hour, retained placenta
- tie up placenta to keep out of way
- once placenta is out, check it
- make sure it is complete, check color and consistency, weigh it
