FINAL EXAM: Breeding Systems Flashcards
What is a breeding system?
A process intended to result in pregnancy
Breeding systems are often regulated by breed associations
- some systems may be prohibited
- some may be allowed under some circumstances
- failure to follow rules = no foal registry
What is an assisted reproductive system?
- large human intervention
- allowable procedures may vary
Who allows natural service system?
Allowed by all/most major registries
What happens with assisted reproductive systems?
- semen is collected from stallion
- semen is placed in mare
Types of semen
- fresh: inseminate in a few hours; mare and stallion close proximity
- cooled: use in 48 hours
- Frozen: 72 hours
Advantages of AI
- can transport semen instead of horse
- number of mares/stallion (>300/year)
- health and safety for people and horses
- ease of semen evaluation
- flexibility/scheduling
Disadvantages of AI
- special equipment
- special expertise
- can breed many mares to same stallion -> narrows gene pool
- can be inconvenient -> finding vet at right time
Typical stallion management
- training stallion to use dummy
- semen divided and diluted (extended)
- shipped or used
Typical mare management
- monitor follicular development
- when ovulation is close -> order semen
- mare is inseminated before ovulation
Donor Mare (ET)
- mare is bred, usually AI
- embryo is collected (~7d post ovulation)
- donor mare is “dam” for registry
- some registries don’t allow ET
- some control #foals/year
Recipient Mare (ET)
- mare’s stage of estrus is synchronized with donor mare
- embryo is transferred or transplanted into recipient mare
- success rate (live foal) ~85%
- conditions of recipient mare
- conditions of donor mare
Advantages of ET
- more foals per mare per year
- mare can keep competing
- mares who can’t carry a foal can still produce
Disadvantages of ET
- Expensive
- Need skilled people
- Registry restrictions
Natural service systems (live cover)
Only system allowed by jockey club
- Pasture mating
- Hand mating
Advantages of pasture mating
-low labor, facilities, skill needed, etc
Disadvantages of pasture mating
- safety for horses
- hygiene lower
- knowledge of breeding date
- knowing if she’s pregnant
- limits # mares bred
Advantages of hand mating
- know dates
- safer for horses
- individual mare/stallion matings
- mare & stallion can live apart
- foal safety
- # mares bred to stallion more than pasture mating (still less than AI)
Disadvantages of hand mating
- less safe than AI
- less hygienic than AI
- fewer mares than Ai
- must know reproductive status of mare
- mare and stallion must be in same place
