Gesell's (nature) maturation theory Flashcards
1
Q
What did Gesell believe?
A
Growth is determined by genetics. All individuals have an inner ‘biological clock’ that determines when and what rate physical develop will progress.
2
Q
Gesell’s study
A
in 1925 Gesell formulated a cyclical spiral divided into stages repeated through life. Although Gesell acknowledged the environment, he believed that this didn’t change the genetic make up of a child, but provided stability for genetics to develop.
-He also stated that development is predetermined and environment has little influence.
-He found that milestones were helpful indicators to measure children’s development delay.
3
Q
Criticisms of Gesell’s theory.
A
- The maturation theory isn’t helpful in explaining individual or cultural differences for children with learning difficulties.
