Etymology Origins
A
Knowing the etymology (origins) of words will help us here:
Epi = Above
Hypo = Below
Geal = Ground
Cotyl = Cotyledon
In order to get epigeal germination
(ie the cotyledons end up above the ground as in beans)
The hypocotyl must elongate –
(ie the part of the stem below the cotyledon.)
In order to get hypogeal germination
(ie the cotyledons end up below the ground as in pea and corn)
The epicotyl must elongate –
(ie the part of the stem above the cotyledon.)
