Germination Flashcards
Define germination.
Germination is the regrowth of the embryo, after a period of dormancy, if the environmental conditions are suitable
What does germination involve?
The regrowth of the embryo
Why is germination said to involve the regrowth of the embryo?
Because the zygote initially grows to form the embryo, which then remains dormant for some time
What happens to the embryo when when germination occurs?
The embryo resumes its growth
List the conditions needed for germination
4
Water
Oxygen
Suitable temperature
Completed dormancy
Why is water needed for germination?
3
Water is needed to allow enzyme reactions to occur
The seed absorbs water from the soil
This causes the seed to swell (and increase in weight) and allows enzymes to function
What type of reactions require water?
Enzyme reactions
How does the seed get its water?
By absorbing water from the soil
What affect does the seed absorbing water from the soil have?
The seed swells and increases in weight which allows enzymes to function
Why is oxygen needed for germination?
2
Oxygen is needed for aerobic respiration
It is absorbed from the soil
What process is oxygen needed for?
Aerobic respiration
Where does the seed get its oxygen needed for aerobic respiration?
It is absorbed from the soil
Write a note on the need of a suitable temperature for germination.
(3)
A suitable temperature is needed to allow enzyme reactions to take place
Each species has its own preferred temperature for germination
Suitable temperatures are usually between 5 and 30 degrees.
What is the range of suitable temperatures required for germination?
Between 5 and 30
A suitable temperature is needed for what type of reactions?
Enzyme reactions
