Geriatric Considerations for PT intervensions Flashcards
What is Deconditioning?
A complex process of physiological change following a period of inactivity, bed rest or sedentary lifestyle.
Factors influencing Aerobic Capacity
Oxygen consumption
- Cardiac performance
- musculoskeletal changes
- metabolic changes
What can we do to improve aerobic capacity?
-Therapeutic exercise (needto follow the overload principle)
What are the 4 components of an exercise prescription
- Mode
- Intensity
- Duration
- Frequency
Define Overload princiiple
-states the increase in habitual aerobic workload above the normally experienced will cause adaptations that improve maximal aerobic capacity.
Examples of energy conservation techniques

Define Ataxia
- Lack of coordination between movements and/or body parts during a specific movement.
- Damage to cerebellar structures.
Define Perceptual deficits
Impaired perception of body movement or position.
-Parietal lobe damage
Define Paresis
-Reduced ability to voluntarily activate the spinal motor neurons.
