Geri: Falls & Frailty Flashcards
Risk Factors for
Falls:
Intrinsic factors:
-sensory loss
-chronic diseases
-medication exposure
-impaired balance and slow walking speed
-urinary incontinence
What is fragility
Syndrome, characterised by LOSS OF RESERVES (energy, ability, cognition, health)
Risk Factors for fragility
Abnormalities ACROSS SYSTEMS:
(haematological, inflammatory hormonal, adipose, neuromuscular, and micronutrient
Is fragility a normal part of aging?
No.
A clinical syndrome resulting from multisystem impairments
What is the Gold standard for definition fragility?
No gold standard
Two most COMMON Definitions of Frailty
- Frailty Phenotype
- Frailty index
What is the frailty phenotype?
- Weight loss
- Self reported exhaustion
- Low energy
- Slow gait speed
- Weak grip strength
Medications that increase risk of falls
-FRIDs (falls risk increasing drugs)
= CNS active drugs
= cardiovascular (reduce blood pressure)
- Sedative drugs (benzo)
- Anticholinergic drugs
- Polypharmacy
