Geology: Rocks Flashcards
Rock Cycle
Continual process by which new rock forms from old rock material
Rock
Naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter
Weathering
Process in which water, wind, ice and heat break down rock
Erosion
Process by which wind, water, ice or gravity transports soil sediment from one location to another
Deposition
The process in which material is laid down
Composition
The chemical makeup of a rock, describes either he minerals or other materials in the rock
Texture
The quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and positions of the rocks grains
Igneous
Rock formed from magma cooling and solidifying at the higher levels of Earths crust
Sedimentary Rock
Grains of sediment that are compacted and cemented together to form the rock
Metamorphic Rock
At great depths, intense pressure heat and squeeze sedimentary rock and change it into metamorphic rock
Intrusive Igneous Rock
Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earths surface
Extrusive Igneous Rock
Rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earths surface
Clastic Sedimentary Rock
Rock made up of fragments of rocks cemented together by a mineral such as calcite and quartz
Chemical Sedimentary Rock
Forms from solutions of dissolved minerals and water
Organic Sedimentary Rock
Organic sedimentary rock forms underground
