Geography & Man Flashcards
As people from Mesopotamia, Northern Africa, and China started to domesticAte plants and animals, where did they do this around?
Rivers
Mesopotamia - Tigris, Euphrates
Northern Africa / Egypt - Nile
China - Yellow
What are some environmental factors thAt can influence human migration?
- Agricultural revolution / sources of water
- Climate
- Dust Bowl / Hurricane Katrina
With the beginnings of development and civilization around the rivers (Nile, Tigris, Euphrates, Yellow), what did they develop?
Irrigation for farming
Ways to use water to develop
What was a factor in people moving towards the Nile in Northern Africa 5000 years ago?
Severely drier climate
What places experienced the “Dust Bowl” and what occurred?
Arkansas / Kansas
Climatic Change / not a lot of water
Ppl moved to California for work and farming
Give an example of a natural disaster being a factor in migration
Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of people to move
How is employment a socio-economic factor?
People moves to wherever the jobs are
If there is a certain industry ppl will go there to have a job
What are some factors that influence human migration in socio-economic terms?
Employment - Silicon Valley
- Industrial Age - Urban Centers / factories
In the Industrial Age, what does mechanization mean?
Things can be produced in mass by machines
What are political factors that can influence human migration?
War
Persecution
** Jews during WWII
Cherokee / Trail of Tears
What is the diaspora?
The moving of Jews to all different parts of the world during WWII
How does culture develop?
In relation to physical environment
What are the two main types of cultural development in relation to geography & man?
Agricultural - settled societies
Nomadic societies
** choice comes to do availability of resources **
Nomadic - food grows naturally / a lot of animals to eat
Agricultural - find rivers to irrigate and grow crops
What did the agricultural societies rely on for development?
- Water control techniques - irrigate and control water to farm
- Urban/rural dichotomy
- More complex political system (government has greater responsibilities to manage resources)
Explain urban/rural dichotomy in agricultural societies
Core - urban
Takes advantage of rural region and controls production
Peripheral - rural
Produces and is controlled by rural/core region
