Genres in Fiction Flashcards
literary form with the goal of representing reality as faithfully as possible. Its genesis in Western literature was a reaction against the sentimentality and extreme emotionalism of the works written during the Romantic literary movement, which championed feelings and emotional expression.
Some techniques include writing in vernacular (conversational language), using specific dialects, and placing an emphasis on character rather than plot.
Realism
uses sarcasm, irony, and humor as social criticism to lampoon human folly. Unlike realism, which intends to depict reality as it exists without exaggeration, this genre often involves creating situations or ideas that deliberately exaggerate reality to appear ridiculous to illuminate flawed behaviors.
Satire

Their purpose is generally to entertain, but nonfiction ones can be informative, as well. They also appear in a variety of structures and formats.
Narratives
explain how the world works, its creation, and human behavior exist in most ancient cultures and continue to influence modern cultures.
Myths
stories that have withstood time and are usually popular in a particular region or culture. They often depict the clever success of a common person, though the story may, alternatively, end poorly for the protagonist.
Folktales
short, didactic stories that typically feature imaginary creatures or talking animals.
Fables
stories that typically focus on one character and highlight their victory over a particular enemy or obstacle.
