genome sequencing Flashcards
what is the genome?
all of the genetic material of an organism within a cell in the nucleus
what is genome sequencing?
working out the DNA base sequence for all the DNA in a cell.
how is genome sequencing carried out?
includes the sanger method
constantly being changed and improved
is now automated.
why are prokaryotes more useful in genome sequencing?
do not have any introns so the genome can be used to directly sequence proteins derived from the genetic code/proteome of the organisms
useful for identifying potential antigens for a vaccine.
complex organisms- eukaryotes
eukaryotes contain:
introns
regulatory genes e.g. promoters and terminators
so genome cannot be used directly to sequence proteome.
