Nonsexual genital infections
1) Gardnerella vaginalis - associated with increased early birth rates and low birth weight found with anerobes and Molbincus spp.
2) Actinobacter israelii - associated with formation of calcium carbonate in IUDs and the bacteria live in there
3) C. perfringes - illegal abortions with non-sterile equipment
4) Streptococcus pyogenes-transmitted by dirty hands of the surgeon
5) Candida albicans or other spp.
Sexually transmitted infections
1) Chlamydia trachomatis (most common) - urethritis and cervicitis, PID: fallopian scarring may lead to infertility
2) Neisseria gonorrhoeae (men have acute symptoms, women don’t)
3) Mycoplasma hominis
4) Ureaplasma urealyticus
5) Trichonomas vaginalis (protozoan parasite)
Bacterial infections that affect neonates during birth
1) Neisseria gonorrhoeae (conjunctivitis)
2) E. coli
3) Listeria monocytogenes
4) Chlamydia trachomatis (conjunctivitis and neonatal pneumonia)
Clue cells
vaginal epithelial cells colonized by Non-Lactobacillus bacteria
indicated bacterial vaginitis caused by Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobes
