Genetics Terms 2.0 Flashcards
Homozygous
Having identical alleles for a single trait.
Dominant
The allele that is expressed no matter what the other allele is.
Heterozygous
When one of the alleles is dominant and the other allele is recessive
Recessive
The allele that is not expressed when two different alleles are present. This trait will only be expressed when 2 such alleles are present.
Heredity
The passing down of physical characteristics or traits from one
generation to another. This ensures that the offspring have characteristics of the parent, but are not carbon copies.
Phenotype
A visible or measurable trait that is passed on and expressed in offspring. For example a person’s eye colour, hair colour, height, nose shape, skin colour, and all other physical features.
Genotype
All of the genetic information passed on to the offspring whether it is
expressed or hidden.
Mutagen
Agents that can make changes in the DNA of an organism.
Allele
One of the alternative forms of a gene. In most organisms there are 2
for any one gene (one from each parent), which occupy the same
position on homologous chromosomes. They can either be the same or they can be different.
