Genetics Mendel's Experiements Flashcards
Who is given credit for the discovery of genetics?
Gregor Mendel, a priest from what is now the Czech Republic.
What is a character in genetics?
An observable, physical feature of an organism. (Seed Shape)
What is a trait in genetics?
A particular form of a character (Round Seeds)
What is a parental generation in an experiment?
It is a cross breeding between two homozygous organisms, one being homozygous dominant and the other being homozygous recessive.
What is the 1st filial generation?
It is the offspring of the parent generation, all of which are heterozygous, mixing genes from the parent generation.
What is the 2nd filial generation?
The first generation self pollinates and with two heterozygous alleles, produces 3 different genotypes.
What is a dominant trait?
A trait that appears more often in subsequent generations of an organism.
What is a recessive trait?
A trait the appears less often in subsequent generations of an organism.
What is a monohybrid cross?
Observing and contrasting a single character over the course of several generations.
