Genetics Flashcards
What are gametes?
Sex cells (sperm and egg)
What process makes gametes?
Meiosis
Oocyte
Egg cell
haploid (n)
Number of chromosomes in a sex cell (gamete)
What process restores the diploid number?
Fertilization
What happens during fertilization?
Sperm and egg cell meet to restore the diploid number
diploid (2n)
Number of chromosomes in a body cell
haploid for humans
23
diploid for humans
46
Other terms for body cells
Somatic cells or autosomes
Homologous chromosomes
Separate chromosomes that contain the same type of gene in the same location (look like 2 sticks or 2 boomerangs)
How are homologous chromosomes inherited?
1 from mom and 1 from dad
Interphase before meiosis 1
Cell is growing, DNA is replicated (chromosomes are duplicated), the cell is carrying out cell processes (looks like an x now)
Prophase 1
- Chromosomes condense
- Homologous chromosomes pair up and touch
- Genes recombine/cross over (exchange genetic material with each other)
What does crossing over lead to?
Recombinant offspring
