Genetics Flashcards
Autosomal Dominant Inheritance
From fathers and mothers to sons and daughters
Autosomal Recessive
Incidence Increases with consanguinity
Mitochondrial
Inherited from mothers only
X-Linked Recessive
Fathers can’t pass to sons
All daughters obligate carriers
Unaffected mothers pass gene to 50% of sons and 50% of daughters
X-Linked Dominant
Affected fathers pass gene to all daughters (affected), and no sons
Affected mothers pass gene to 50% of sons and 50% of daughters (all affected)
Pseudo-dominant
Recessive condition in >1 generation by bad luck
Silent mutation
base substitution doesn’t affect the amino acid produced by a codon
Missense mutation
Changes that affect the amino acid produced by a codon
Nonense Mutation
Changes that result in a premature stop codon
Frameshift mutation
Alteration of reading frame which may lead to entirely different protein or stop codon
