Genetic Variation. Flashcards
Gene:
DNA sequence that specifies and maintains an individual’s character.
Ex: ABO Blood type gene.
Character:
The external and internal features that are common to all individuals in the same species.
EX: Pigmented iris.
Variation:
Differences between individuals of the same species.
Ex: Height and Flower color.
Trait:
Characters that differ between individuals.
Ex: Blue, brown eyes.
Sources of Variation:
Environmental variation.
Genetic Variation.
Environmental Variation:
Arises when individuals live in different environments.
Ex: Difference in altitude.
Genetic Variation:
It is caused by differences in DNA. Genetic variation between individuals in the same species is quite limited.
Can be passed to offspring.
Genetic Variation between humans is:
0.01% difference.
A type of genetic vatriation:
Silent Genetic Variation.
Silent Genetic Variation:
Does not produce traits.
Can be passed from parent to offspring.
Genetic variation that produces traits is:
Located near or on a gene.
Inheritance:
The process of Transmitting traits from parent to offspring.
What affects gene activity?
Genetic Variation.
Allele:
A genetic variation that produces a particular trait.
The ABO type gene is produced by how many genes?
1 gene.
