Genetic Engineering/Recombinant DNA Technology Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
It is human intervention into natural genetic processes. Genetic engineering involves techniques that remove genes from one organism and place them in another. New organisms are created by these processes, they possess new characteristics and some of them must be patented.
What is Recombinant DNA technology?
Recombinant DNA technology is a major branch of genetic engineering. It involves the introduction of new genes into a gene pool (the sum of all the genes shared by a species) by cutting them out of the chromosomes of one species and inserting them into another.
RDNA technology Step 1
A gene is cut out of the chromosome of one species using a restriction enzyme.
