Generators Flashcards
What is basic purpose of a generator?
Changes mechanical energy into electrical energy
What determines the amount of voltage being produced?
The rotors magnetic field strength
Rotor speed
Number of windings
How long should you run the generator before putting a load on it? And what must you do before turning off?
3-5 min and you should make sure all loads are turned off before shutting off the generator
How should you calculate the loads?
1 time the resistive loads and 3 times the inductive loads
What will happen when the generator is over loaded
The circuit breaker will trip and the generator will continue to run
Where must the circuit protection be from the generator?
Outside the gem box
Within 10ft along the wire
And accessible from inside the RV
What controls the magnetic field?
The voltage regulator
What controls the generators RPMs
The governor
What is the EMS?
Energy management system. It automatically removes or sheds loads to keep the generator or shore power from being overloaded
What must you remember when looking to buy a generator for your RV
Must be Listed for RV
Weight limits
Compartment size
Load demand
What must you remember when installing the generator
- Must bond it to the frame
- Must be properly vented
- The compartment must be properly sealed from the living area
What kind of wire must be used on the generator and what rating?
Must use multi strand flexible metal conduit wire that has a minimum 90 degree rating
Where must the exhaust be.
Must extend past the outside of the RV.
And can not be connected to the vehicles exhaust
And what must you remember when using the vehicles fuel?
- Yes but must run separate lines to the tank
- can not draw fuel below 1/4 tank
- can only pull from one tank
What must a diesel generator?
Must have a return line for the fuel
