Generalization, Discrimination, and Stimulus Control Flashcards
Generalization or Transfer
The tendency for the effects of a learning experience to spread.
Response generalization
The tendency for changes in one behaviour to spread to other behaviours.
Stimulus generalization
The tendency for changes in behaviour in one situation to spread to other situations.
Generalization gradient
Data on stimulus generalization plotted on a graph, the figure is the Generalization gradient
Stimulus discrimination
The tendency for behaviour to occur in certain situations, but not in others.
Discrimination is the opposite of:
Generalization
Discrimination training
Procedure to establish discrimination.
The dog salivates when it hears the bell, but not the buzzer
Discriminative stimuli
Stimuli that signal different consequences for a behaviour.
Simultaneous discrimination training
Discriminative stimuli are presented at the same time - pick one or the other.
Successive discrimination training
When stimuli are presented one at a time, and the subject needs to consider if they want to respond or not.
SΔ or S-
Stimulus where behaviour will not be reinforced
S+ or SD
Stimulus where behaviour will be reinforced
Matching to sample
A discrimination training procedure in which the task is to select from two or more comparison stimuli the one that matches a sample.
Oddity matching or mismatching
a variation of matching to sample in which reinforcement is available for selecting the comparison stimulus that is different from the sample. The odd one out
Errorless discrimination training
When the stimulus (SΔ) not resulting in reinforcement is only briefly and weakly presented compared to SD.
