1st line for generalised tonic clonic
- SV in M and F unable to have children (not be started in new patients (male or female) aged under 55 years, unless two specialists independently consider and document that there is no other effective or tolerated treatment, or there are compelling reasons why the reproductive risks do not apply;)
- for F of CB potential, or for M or F under 55, lamotrigine or levetiracetam
2nd line for generalised tonic clonic
if 1st line with SV (for M and F unable to have kids or those OVER 55) is unsuccessful, consider either lamot or levet as 2nd line
1st line for absence seizures
ethosuximide
2nd line and 3rd line for absence seizures
if 1st line ethosuximide unsuccessul, consider 2nd line monotherapy or adjunct with SV for M, and F unable to have kids or M or F over 55
if SV unsuitable or unsuccessul, lamot or levet as 3rd line monotherpy or adjunctive
1st line myoclonic seizures
- SV for M, and F unable to have kids, or those that are over 55
- levet for F of CB potential or those that are under 55
2nd line myoclonic seizures
if 1st line for M and F unable to have kids or if they are over 55 (SV) is unsuccessul, 2nd line monotherapy or adjunct: levet
atonic or tonic seizures - when are they usually seen
childhood
specific epilepsy syndromes
or associated with cerebral damage or learning disabilities
1st line for atonic or tonic seziures
- SV for M, and F unable to have kids and those that are 55 or over
- lamot for F able to have kids
2nd line for atonic or tonic seizures
if SV for M and F unable to have kids unsuccessful or if they are 55 or over, give lamot as 2nd line mono or adjunct
which seizure type may respond poorly to traditional drugs
