General Terms Flashcards
Ionic Compound
A pure substance formed from a metal and a nonmetal; a crystalline solid at SATP with a relatively high melting point and a conductor of electricity in aqueous or molten states; a compound containing positive and negative ions.
Molecular Compound
A pure substance that may be solid, liquid, or gas at SATP, has relatively low melting point , and is non-conductive; a compound consisting of covalently bonded nonmetal atoms
Electrolyte
Substance that conducts electricity in aqueous solution; also a liquid such as a molten solid that conducts electricity.
Dissociation
Dissociation The separation of ions that occurs when an ionic compound is dissolved in water.
Ex: KMnO4(s) => K+(aq) + MnO4-(aq)
Ionization
A process by which a neutral atom or molecule is converted to an ion; the reaction of substances in water to create ions.
Ex: HCl(aq) + H2O(l) => H3O+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
Concentration
A ratio of the quantity of solute to the quantity of solution (or solvent); expressed in a variety of units; mol/L most common
