General: Speed Control Flashcards
1
Q
When should speed control not be applied?
A
- In holding patterns, other than where published on approach charts
- In areas of thunderstorms / known turbulence
2
Q
What should ATCOs keep in mind when issuing speed control?
A
- The application of speed control should be appropriate for the phase of flight.
- Its application over a long period of time may affect aircraft fuel reserves & crew’s planned operating profile.
- Frequent changes of speed should be avoided.
- Pilot’s will adhere to the speed assigne dby ATC & will request ATC approval before making changes.
- Pilots unable to maintain assign speed will inform ATC asap
3
Q
At what speed range should aircraft be transferred from en-route to approach?
A
- 250 - 300kts
4
Q
How do ATCOs ensure aircraft operate in a clean configuation for as long as possible?
A
- Arriving aircraft should not be allocated a speed of less than 210kt (200 for props) unless within 20 track miles of the threshold.
- Then 150 - 180kts can be used.
5
Q
How far before touchdown can speed control be applied by ATCOs?
A
- Speed should not be applied to aircraft after passing a point 4NM from the threshold.
- Otherwise aircraft may have an unstabilised approach.
- (5NM for big jets)
