General: Diversion Procedures

Question 1

For what reasons may an aircraft divert?

Answer 1

• Weather at planned destination is below their minima
• Obstructions on the landing area, which consitute a hazard to landing aircraft, cannot be cleared in a reasonable period
• Failure of airborne equipment
• Failure of essential ground aids to landing in circumstances which would require their use
• Unacceptable delay due to congestion of air traffic
• Closure of the aerodrome of destination

What should ATCOs do when pilots originate the diversion?

Answer 2

• Advise the original destination / aerdrome nearest original destination

What should an ATCO do when a Military aircraft diverts?

What should ATCOs do for diversions to RAF aerodromes?

Answer 4

• Except in an emergency, aircraft shall not be diverted to an RAF / USAF aerodrome without the prior approval of D&D
