General Pulmonary Physiology Concept Flashcards
How many divisions are there in the pulmonary tree?
23
What are the sympathetic nervous system receptors of the smooth muscle of the conducting airways?
What are the parasympathetic?
Sympathetic: beta2 -> bronchodilation
Parasympathetic: M3 -> bronchoconstriction
Region of the lung completely lined with alveoli but contains little smooth muscle and no cilia
alveolar ducts
volume that can be inspired above tidal volume
inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)
~3 L
volume that can be exhaled below tidal volume
expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
~1.2 L
volume of gas remaining in the lung following maximal forced expiration
residual volume (RV) ~1.2 L
the volume remaining in the lungs following normal expiration (also called the equilibrium volume)
functional residual capacity (FRC)
vital capacity (VC) + residual volume (RV)
total lung capacity (TLC)
includes anatomic dead space of the conducting airways & the functional alveolar dead space
physiologic dead space
*note in NORMAL people the anatomic dead space is ~ to physiologic dead space
