A

Cold weather precautions for upper deck hydrants, salt, shovels, space heater for QM shack, alternate personnel more frequently, dress for the weather

What considerations do you take when coming on board ship for OOD duty watch

A
  • look at appearance of ship/ items on jetty
  • check lines/ shore cables
  • look at the mast to see what flags are flying on us and those around. (3rd Sub, etc.)
  • Check the QM shack, make sure all the books are there, equipment is correct prior to taking the watch
  • check the upper decks, ensure they are tidy, no hazards near the missiles
  • do a set of rounds of the ship, know where work is going on, ship is in condition X-ray, Yankee, etc
  • Turnover, chits, duty watch muster

Explain the different Submarine messages

A
  • If 1 hour has passed since a submarine has not given its regular message, it is called a SUBLOOK
  • If 6 hours have passsed since a submarine’s last message that is a SUBMISS
  • At a SUBMISS, SUBSAR is closed up
  • A SUBMISS can be held indefinitely
  • A SUBSUNK can only be called after definitive proof of a submarine sinking. i.e. debris, bodies, ship pieces,
  • During an exercise it is called a SUB SMASH 1,2,3
  • SUBMISS, SUBSAR, SUBSUNK, SUBLOOK is only during actual events

What is Charge in terms of OOD

A

The OOD is delegated Charge, the responsibility vested by the CO over the ship’s company, with the exception of the XO and may not be relieved of their responsibilities except as authorized by the CO.

When do you call the CO?

A
  • Upon receiving an order or information indicating the requirement to elevate or reduce the FP state
  • bomb threat
  • for a security or intruder alarm
  • for any real damage control incident happening onboard.
  • for any incident which may have compromised the structural integrity of the ship or her equipment
  • for casualty or man overboard
  • for a fuel or HAZMAT spill
  • for a RADHAZ incident
  • discovery of an unsecured and unmanned restricted space
  • when the ship may not be able to proceed to sea as intended
  • sustained wind above 25 knots or significant weather deterioration, including measures taken to mitigate the conditions
  • Any incident requiring the ship to be brought to emergency stations, after having controlled the situation,
  • consider contacting the XO first.

  • Charge is the responsibility vested in the CO for proper and safe movements and operation of the ship and her company
  • The CO may delegate the duties and responsibilities associated with Charge to an OOW who shall then exercise command over all persons onboard except the CO, XO
