General Dermatology Flashcards
what are causes of skin failure
erythroderma toxic epidermal necrolysis severe erythema multiform pustular psoriasis pemphigus
what are the 3 functions of the skin
temp control
barrier function
cutaneous blood flow
what does skin failure do to the temperature control aspect of skin
cant sweat or vasoconstrict - temp swings up and down
what does skin failure do to the barrier function aspect of skin
raw skin surfaces loses lots of fluid and electrolytes, protein loss, increased bacterial proliferation
what does skin failure do to the cutaneous blood flow aspect of skin
shunt through skin may lead to high output cardiac failure in those with poor cardiac reserve
what are some other aspects that skin failure interferes with
erythroderma may lead to malabsroption hair and nail loss
also may lead to handling problems
how is skin failure treated
controlled environmental temperatures
monitor and replace losses, increased protein diet, antibiotics
aggressively treat skin infections, support vitals
nurse as for burns
