General Anesthesia Flashcards
Patients would benefit from this type of anesthesia if local anesthesia is ineffective due to infection or allergy.
General anesthesia
Contraindications to GA
- Medical contraindications
- Healthy/Cooperative patients
- Minimal dental needs
How long is a kid sedated for?
30 minutes
How many teeth do we say we need to do GA?
At least 4
What percent of GA dental appointments are outpatient?
70%
ASA class needed for GA?
I or II
T/F: Well-controlled chronic systemic disorders can be considered with anesthesia consultation.
True
Most common complications of kids under 5 from general anesthesia.
Vomiting
Fever
Sore throat
When should a letter me bailed to the parents prior to surgery with information on when to arrive for the GA surgery?
2 weeks prior
Give gas FIRST, then this for general anesthesia.
IV sedation
When the vocal cords shut after taking a breath, preventing air from getting to the lungs.
Laryngospasm
Preferred airway maintenance for good access to the oral cavity.
Nasotracheal Intubation
Used to prevent dehydration during surgery.
Lactated Ringer’s Solution
Purpose of a throat pack down the pharynx
To prevent fluids from entering the lungs.
This must be removed before the ET (endotracheal) tube is removed, otherwise the patient will choke to death and die.
Throat pack
This seals the area around the tracheal tube during provision of GA and the surgical procedure, and thus prevents leakage of gases.
Also stabilizes the tracheal tube to prevent its displacement during the surgical procedure
Throat pack
May see a change in this during extractions due to pain receptors still being active (although conscious pain is NOT interpreted by the CNS).
Heart rate/blood pressure
This is rarely used during GA, but has hemostatic benefits.
LA
This type of isolation is preferred in the OR.
Rubber dam
These are preferred to large fillings.
Stainless Steel Crowns
Follow-up occurs when after GA?
2 weeks
Be aware of this in Down Syndrome patients during GA.
Preventing atlantoaxial subluxation
