Gender schema theory Flashcards
What does gender schema theory set up
Perceptions and memory, internal mental representations creating shortcuts in thinking. expectations about characteristics of males and females.
When and how to schema develop
2-3 yrs old, interactions and society
Ingroups and outgroups
Children favour their ingroup (those they identify with) so seek information about how they behave and ignore behaviours from an outgroup. can explain entrenched beliefs and children ignoring information which doesn’t fit their schema.
bradbard et al
Research support- told 4-9 yr olfs that gender neutral items e.g pizza cutter were boy/girl. Greater intrest for items in ingroup and recalled more gender appropriate items
Hoffman
Children with working class mothers hold less stereotypes views. Suggests that not all gender inconsistent behaviours is forgotten.
