Chromosomes and hormones Flashcards
What are chromosomes
made from DNA (a gene section of DNA) 23 pairs
Gender determining chromosomes
pair 23, egg-X, sperm X or Y.
y contains the sex determining region which causes testes development
What are hormones
trigger gender development through the growth of reproductive organs
Male hormones
Androgens are produced from 8 weeks
Control the development of male sex organs
Linked to aggression
Evidence for androgens being linked to aggression
Van de poll et al- female rats who were given testosterone became more aggressive.
Oestrogen
Controls female sexual characteristics and menstruation
linked to emotionality and irritability (PMT)
Oxytocin
‘love hormone’
triggers bonding with mother and child after birth and stimulated lactation. reduces cortisol
Chromosome support
David Reimer- born a girl, socialised as a girl but nature and biology was stronger.
He was castrated so not an influence from hormones.
The presence of a twin brother may have caused identification
Hormone support
Congenital adrenal hyperplastia- high testosterone in dev. (girls developing ambiguous genitalia)
May be due to constrictivism
