Gender roles and equality Flashcards
Catholic Christians believe that men and women…
Are equal but different. The book of Genesis teaches that men and women are all born in the ‘image of God’.
Evidence to support catholic christians views is:
Jesus was the Son of God and he choose 12 male disciples so he clearly wanted men to lead in the Church.
Evidence to go against catholic Christian views is:
Jesus lived 2,000 years ago and attitudes to gender have changed. Women are now seen as equal in positions of leadership.
Liberal Christians believe that:.
Women should be allowed in places of power in the Church. They think Jesus only having male disciples was only because of the views of that time
The Liberal Christian ideas are supported by:
The 21st Century laws and attitudes that you can’t discriminate based on gender.
Weaknesses of the liberal Christian ideas are:
It contradicts the Bible when Jesus chose only men as his disciples.
Most Muslims believe:
Equal but play different roles. Women are expected to be housewives while men are expected to be breadwinners. (Surah 49) Men and women were created from a single soul in the very beginning.
Strengths of the Muslim view:
Both being a provider and a homemaker are very important responsibilities - one is not better than the other, just different
Weakness of the Muslim view:
True equality extends to opportunities and roles e.g. if you believe that genders are equal then this should be reflected in the roles they choose e.g. they can be providers
