Gender: Marxism Flashcards
1
Q
Engels:
A
- Says that women are subordinate because of the ownership of private property and the nuclear family.
- This means that capitalism is the cause for gender inequality as the bourgeoisie and proletariat roles translate to male and female roles in the family.
- In a capitalist society, men have control over women.
- The nuclear family has led to women’s sexuality being restricted and enforced monogamy to protect male rights.

Q
Neo-marxists and gender:
A
- Social structure is based on the dominance of some groups over others.
- Conflict isn’t just based on a class struggle between employee and employer, instead it occurs on a wider level amongst all groups.
- E.g. Parents and children, Husband and wives, Young and old

Q
Evaluation of marxism:
A
- This theory focuses on macro issues rather than the small micro interaction which will help to understand the relationships (social action theory)
- This theory is also outdated – Postmodernists believe that Marxists don’t recognise changes to gender roles over the last 50 years.
