Ethnicity: New right Flashcards
1
Q
Murray:
A
Came up with idea of the underclass:
- Home are littered and unkept
- Men are unable to hold down a job
- Teens become juvenile delinquents due to inadequate socialisation
- Underclass is a plague
- Government policies made people dependent on benefits.
- In the 60s Black single mothers and Black youths lost interest in getting jobs
- This meant in 1989 Britain had developed an underclass and all traditional values had gone
2
Q
Evaluation of Murray:
A
- Ignores the economic divisions that lead to the underclass forming
- Murray blames them for the situation they are in rather than looking at potential causes (racial prejudice, discrimination)
3
Q
Sewell:
A
- There are a high proportion of African-Caribbean boys who are raised in lone-parent families (57% compared to 25% White families)
- This means their sons don’t have male role models which can lead to deviance
- This Black masculinity is reinforced by the media through things such as Gangster rap
- Led to an emphasised amount of news on street crime
4
Q
Evaluation of Sewell:
A
- Controversial study as he blames Black fathers for deserting their families and the black community for not supporting their young people
- Sewell has tried to divert from the real issues that cause deviance (racist education system, economic deprivation)
