- Females only represent 4.5% of the prison population.
- 4 out of 5 crimes are carried out by men.
What did Campbell and Graham & bowling’s research allude to?
That females commit more crime that is suggested in official statistics.
Who developed the chilvary thesis?
Pollock
Outline the underlying argument of the chilvary thesis
Agents in the criminal justice system are socialised to act in a more lenient way towards women. Therefore, females are often treated in a paternalistic way by the police and the courts. For example, women are more likely to be released on bail than men.
Give a criticism of the chilvary thesis
Heidenson argues that the is a bias against women in court. For example, girls are more likely than bigs to be punished for promiscuous activity.
What does parsons claim the differences in crime activity relies on
Primary gendered socialisation according to parsons. Heidenson argues that due to stereotypical domesticated roles of females, they have less opportunity to commit crimes. Also, females are less likely to go out at night (where crime and deviance is most likely to occur) due to the fear of violence. However, alder claims as women’s lives more opportunistic and less patriarchal women will have greater confidence and opportunity to commit crime.
