CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION Flashcards
Outline the right and left realist perspective on crime control
Right realists suggest that individuals commit crime because the rewards outweigh the costs so in order to reduce crime rates the costs must be increased.
Left realists focus on the organisation Of society and the inequality poverty and disadvantage create an environment where crime is justifiable
Outline situational crime prevention
Refers to eight realist measures in reducing opportunity’s for crime. The aim is to increase the risk of being caught and making people harder targets by investing in security and surveillance which will make it very hard for criminals to commit deviant acts. For example, the stoke council increased street lighting and crime was reduced by 26%
Outline environmental crime prevention
Wilson uses the broken window thesis to explain environmental crime prevention. If small petty crimes like vandalising isn’t removed this sends out a message to criminals that society doesn’t care and encourages further deviance. Therefore a zero-tolerance policy should be persued this was applied in New York between 93-96 and there was a major decline in all crime.
Outline social and community crime prevention
Left realists/Marxists argue that the social and economic conditions of those likely to commit crime must be addressed such as poverty and unemployment as urban crime is a response to these issues the Perry pre school project in USA gave an intellectual enrichment programme to a selected group of black 3-4 year olds for two years, when they were 40 they were less likely to be in employment than their peers and had lower rates of crime.
