Liquid clay used in pre- formed molds.
wet clay
Softest form of clay to work with.
leather hard
Half dry clay. When the clay is hard, but still soft enough to be worked with.
bone dry
Completely dry clay. When no moisture is left and the clay is ready to be fired.
kiln
Oven that is specifically used to fire pottery.
bisque fire
First fire done to clay to get it ready to be glazed. This is done at cone 4.
glaze fire
Second fire done to clay to seal the glaze and finish the piece. This is done at cone 6.
cone
Term used to describe the temperature of the kiln.
vessel
Term used to describe pottery works such as a vase or mug
glaze
Type of paint used specifically for pottery.
wedging
Method used to get air bubbles out of wet clay. This is done by kneading the clay like dough.
earthenware
Type of clay. Great for hand building and what we use in class.
hand building
Sculpting method that focuses on creating work by hand.
wheel throwing
Sculpting method that focuses on creating works with a pottery wheel.
score and slip
Method used to connect two pieces of clay together.
